Fire At Plaza 138 in Kahnawake Destroys Local Businesses and Closes Hwy 138.

An intense fire at Kahnawake's Plaza 138, (on Highway 138 Eastbound toward the Mercier Bridge) has destroyed a well known area mall which houses a number of businesses like Resto 99, Sweety's Ice Cream and more.

At approximately 3 a.m., a passerby reportedly signaled the presence of fire to local authorities after noticing flames and smoke coming from the building.

Dozens of firefighters were on scene to battle the raging fire yet were hampered by the absence of fire hydrants in the area. Water to fight the fire had be brought in from off site locations.

An immediate concern was the fear that the Wolfo Gas Station located at the entrance of the Plaza 138 parking lot, would be reached by the blaze.

The constant vigilance of the firefighters and authorities managed to keep all under control and the fire at bay from the gas station.

Fortunately no injuries have been reported.

Authorities remain at the scene. The highway remains closed in both directions from St Francis in Chateauguay to the 207 highway.

Residents from Chateauguay, Kahnawake and proximate South Shore towns are still being detoured to alternate routes, although the highway could likely reopen later this morning, as per Kahnawake Peacekeepers.

No immediate cause of the blaze has been disclosed thus far.
