Speaking of "shipwrecks", Beauharnois' nautical nightmare "The Kathryn Spirit" is soon to be sorted as the Federal Gov't have finally decided to step in to assist.
The contracting out for the construction of a protective embankment perimeter has been awarded to Groupe St. Pierre, who will reportedly commence to build the embankment in the Springtime in the waters of Lake St. Louis.
Transport Minister Marc Garneau announced the initiative yesterday additionally estimating that there may be as many as another 600 or 700 abandoned vessels in Canadian waters.
"The Kathryn Spirit" was abandoned in Beauharnois in 2011, when a project to take it apart and sell it off for scrap was never initiated.
Later evidence proved that the decaying vessel was also holding contaminated water much to the chagrin citizens, politicians and activists alike, who have fought relentlessly for subsequent intervention by governmental agencies.
A committee made up of federal and provincial representatives suggested that the ship be broken up without moving the ship.
The Canadian Coast Guard is expected to continue in it's monitoring of the ship and the local waters until the demantling process is complete.
The ship Kathryn Spirit was a open hatch bulk carrier built in 1967. She was primarily used for the transport of bulk commodities on the Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence Seaway.
