National Non-Smoking Week

National Non-Smoking Week is January 18-24, 2015

Since 1977, National Non-Smoking Week has been a yearly event in Canada aiming to:

Educate Canadians about the dangers of smoking

Prevent people who do not smoke help people quit smoking

Promote the right of individuals to breathe air unpolluted by tobacco smoke

Demoralize the tobacco industry, tobacco industry marketing practices, tobacco products, and tobacco use

Assist in the attainment of a smoke-free society in Canada

Tobacco use is one of the leading risk factors for chronic disease and is responsible for more than 37,000 premature deaths in Canada each year. This week’s National Non-Smoking Week provides the opportunity to highlight and renew our collective efforts to reduce tobacco use in this country.

It is estimated that 1 in 5 Canadians still smoke.

Today, the Government of Canada joined the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) to launch Break It Off - a campaign designed to help young adults quit smoking and stay smoke-free. This multi-year $4.8 million campaign is part of the Government's Federal Tobacco Control Strategy which demonstrates our commitment to protecting Canadians from the dangers of tobacco use.

During this week, let's continue to support smokers in their efforts to quit smoking and live healthier lives.

Canadians needing support to quit smoking can call a quit coach at 1-866-366-3667 or visit www.gosmokefree.gc.ca/quit.
